Discuss, question, challenge and take action to promote race equality and diversity


  • To ensure the voices of BAME staff are actively engaged and respected
  • Help inform, influence and challenge UoB’s Race Equality Policy
  • Utilise current statistics to identify gaps and under-representation within the staff make-up of UoB
  • Provide representation to University committees, recruitment and consultations
  • Provide additional opportunity for Continuing Professional Development through the ADITI Leadership Programme, workshops, coaching and mentoring to aid career planning and promotion prospects
  • Invest in social and cultural spaces for members to support and empower one another
  • Improve awareness of the challenges faced by BAME employees at UoB and take necessary steps to address them
  • Promote a culture of inclusivity
  • Provide information and resources via the BAME website and signpost BAME staff to other sources of support and guidance within and outside of UoB
  • To work with the Equality and Diversity Team and student BAME groups to programme Black History Month and other celebrations and awareness raising events
  • To launch the BAME Staff Network with an event in mid-June
  • Access the HR statistics on BAME staff on a yearly basis to inform future projects and see if progress is being made

The Network membership is run by BAME staff for BAME staff of all backgrounds and staff groups within UoB and all identifying with BAME characteristics are welcome to join.

In addition, non-BAME members of staff who actively believe in the promotion of race equality and diversity can join us in influencing change and providing opportunity at the University of Birmingham.

There will be no restrictions on the numbers of staff within the Network. The Network will elect two Co-chairs and a minute taker/secretary that will be responsible for servicing the meetings. Other roles include Marketing and Communications, Events Co-ordinator, Website Developer, Social Secretary, Race Equality Adviser and an Historian


The Network will meet on a quarterly basis but may meet more frequently if and when necessary.
